frequently asked questions

How do I order a cake?
We are happy to discuss the basics of our cakes on the phone, but we prefer cake orders to be placed in person. In our studio, we can help you with design and flavor ideas. The first thing we need to know is the date of your event so that we may check our availability. We accept a limited number of projects for any given date. When placing an order it is helpful to have an idea of the number of servings, as well as the style or design you have in mind. Tell us your theme, colors, and any specific design ideas you have. We also ask for detailed contact information, event information, preferred pick-up or delivery times, and a non-refundable deposit to reserve your date.

How far in advance should I place my order?
We accommodate a limited number of cakes for any given date depending on the complexity of the design. Therefore, we recommend you place your order as soon as you know a date for your event. For brides, if you have your dress and venue, it is not too early to proceed with the cake. We require a non-refundable deposit to reserve your space on our production schedule. Most of our wedding cakes are booked six months to a year in advance. We are often unable to accommodate short notice requests. Simply put, more time is always better.

How much is that cake on your website? Will you quote over the phone?
All of our cakes were custom designed for a specific bride or event. We cannot tell you how much a previous client paid for their cake because prices depend on many different factors. The number would be meaningless for your order. It is always better to come into our studio where we can discuss your desires. This is the easiest and most reliable way to obtain an accurate quote.

We do not provide estimates over the phone. We often find clients are unable to express their design desires or are vague when describing the type of cake they want making a phone quote inaccurate.

What are your prices?
All of our cakes are custom designed for our clients using sketches. Cakes are priced according to several different criteria. Our base price per serving gives you a general idea of the starting price of your cake. Factors that can add to the price include cake sculpting, gumpaste flowers, modeling or other gumpaste décor, detailed piping, painting, beading, airbrushing, or other time consuming design elements.

Our minimum price for wedding cakes is $350 and $150 for celebration cakes.

Do you require a deposit for cake orders?
Yes. You are reserving a space on our production schedule. A non-refundable 25% deposit will place your cake on our schedule. Orders are taken on a first come first serve basis, and we turn away business once a date is closed, therefore the deposit is non-refundable. We understand that some clients prefer to have a tasting or care to shop around before making a final decision, so we ask that any interested clients confirm their order with a deposit within one week of the tasting or consult. After this time, we consider the date free for the next client. Popular dates fill rapidly.

All cakes must be paid for in full at least one month before the delivery/pick-up date for weddings and two weeks for celebration cakes. We do accept cash, checks and credit cards.

What is your delivery/set-up charge?
Our delivery/set-up charge starts at $50

Do you ship cakes?
We do not ship our cakes at this time. We prefer to do cakes within the state of Texas. If you would like Amazing Kakes to design and create your cake we would be happy to fly to your destination and make the cake on site. We have flown as far as San Francisco, California to do a cake.

Do you place fresh flowers on the cake?
Yes. We insist on placing fresh flowers on the cake ourselves at no extra charge. We only require that you make the arrangements with your florist.

Do you make gumpaste/hand molded flowers?
Yes, we make exquisite gumpaste flowers. We do require 2 months lead time prior to your event so changes in your design are not permitted past that point. Pricing on this varies and is available on request.

Do you provide silver cake stand, pedestals and cake knife/server?
Yes, we do provide these items at no charge. However, we do require a refundable security deposit on these items which will be refunded upon return of said items.

Cake Tastings
Cake tastings are available for wedding cakes only and require at least one week’s advance notice. Tastings are also offered for special occasion cakes serving 100 or more. Since we do custom bake each cake, we have to limit the selections. Tastings two flavors will give you a good idea of the quality and sophistication of our products. More than 2 flavors are really overwhelming for the taste buds without a palate cleanser. If you still desire to have more than 2 flavors at your tasting, we will happily bake additional flavors for you at a charge of $25 per additional flavor.

How do I schedule a tasting?
We do offer tasting appointments to clients based on our availability for the event date. If we are available on your date, then we will schedule an appointment to discuss all of the details of your event.

Due to the busy schedules of our clients and the time constraints and deadlines we face, most appointments are made during business hours, Tuesdays through Thursdays, 11am to 5pm. Fridays and Saturdays are busy finishing and delivering cakes. We try to accommodate everyone, so please contact us and we will make every effort to work within your schedule.

We appreciate that you may have tasting appointments with other bakers, we do ask that you make Amazing Kakes your last tasting appointment.

How many people can come to a wedding cake tasting?
Our studio will accommodate up to 4 people. Too many opinions can be overwhelming and make your decision more challenging.

What is fondant? Must it be used on my cake?
Fondant is a rolled icing made from sugar, gelatin and corn syrup (and in our case, white chocolate). We get our fondant from Switzerland and our brides love it. We strive to design great looking cakes regardless of the type of finish; buttercream or fondant. Keep in mind, the fondant is not a replacement for buttercream, rather it is a final coating on top of the buttercream, enrobing your cake, keeping it fresh and moist.

Many designs and techniques cannot be replicated with buttercream alone. Fondant can update an old fashioned design, and provides for a more modern look overall. It also increases stability, seals in freshness, and makes the cake easier to handle, decorate, transport and slice. It is the most heat stable of any finish, making its use near mandatory in warm/humid weather months. It can be easily removed by anyone not wishing to eat it.

We want to use Styrofoam tiers to increase the size or to lower the overall cost, will you do that?
Our pricing is based on the amount of detail and handwork involved in carrying out a particular design. A Styrofoam tier still needs to be decorated and is subject to the same pricing guidelines as actual cake.

Retainer
As a retainer, an estimated 25% of your balance is due when you place your wedding cake order.  This secures your wedding date and time with us and is non-refundable and non-transferrable.  We accept cash, checks and credit cards.  The amount is based on the proposed cake design price per serving.  All retainers must arrive within 3 days of the order being placed or the requested date and time is released for other clients.  Wedding cake orders placed less than a month in advance are considered a rush order and will incur a $50 rush fee and the full payment in cash is required at the time of the order.  The full balance is due 30 days prior to the wedding.
